Ski Gear Review: Apex ski boots feature radical design for comfort

See also

More than any other ski boots, Apex boots are sure to draw comments on a lift ride. The radically different boot consists of a removable snowboard boot inside a hard open chassis that provides the additional stiffness needed for skiing.

Comfort is a chief selling point of Apex boots and in that regard they certainly deliver. For skiers who have never snowboarded, the inner boot with the Boa lacing system common on snowboard boots might provoke a bit of envy toward their one-plank counterparts.

With the Boa system, the ease of adjustments on the slopes seems like a revelation. Compared to the Boa system’s consistent micro-adjustment caressing the foot and cuff, clamping down traditional four-buckle ski boots now feels medieval.

Apex boots may not be on World Cup racers and hardcore cliff-huckers may scoff at the stiffness and performance. For 90 percent of resort skiers, however, Apex boots handle the demands of the terrain.

Comfort comes at a price. Ranging from $1,295 for a lightweight carbon chassis down to $595 for a hard-plastic chassis, Apex boots are among the most expensive ski boots on the market. Of course, for skiers who also snowboard, the two-for-one nature of the boots makes the price more palatable. Many ski shops carry Apex boots. They are also available through the Apex website.
