Show and tell took an unexpected turn for one kindergarten student in Sumter, South Carolina. She hastily grabbed her brother’s clear plastic gun and headed off to school with a parent. The parent did not know she had placed the toy inside her backpack.
Once it was discovered she had the toy gun her father was called and told his young daughter had been expelled for bringing a gun to school. Imagine his shock when he was shown a clear plastic gun.
After the issue of expulsion spread like wildfire over the internet and state and national news media, Sumter County School Superintendent Dr. Randolph Bynum retracted the decision.
How far is too far? What can be done to educate parents of the necessity of talking with our children about what is proper to take out of the house and what things should be kept at home? It would seem reason and common sense does not exist. Communication on a level that a young child can understand is at an urgent level for most of America. Talk to your children, young and old. Be sure they can say back to you what you are trying to communicate to them. Reduce the panic.
