Six degrees of separation...Musically speaking

Per Wikipedia, “Six degrees of separation" refers to the idea that everyone is on average approximately six steps away from any other person on Earth.”  Such is definitely true of the Indie music scene in the Triad.

My first step in writing this column was to notify all of the bands that I had interviewed or played music from when I was hosting Locals Only.  Within hours I had received enough emails to keep this column going for months.  The first artist that I heard from was Katelyn Marks.  Katelyn made it into the fourth round on American Idol and was on my show in 2009.  She is country.  She is young.  She is very pretty.  And she can sing.  But how does this relate to the whole “six degrees of separation” thing?

Well first, Katelyn’s booking agent, Rick Farmer, had booked me for a gig a few years back.  The second was through her guitar player/boyfriend Derek Drye.  Derek played guitar briefly for my label mate Josh Thompson.  I saw him play with Josh at The Clubhouse here in Greensboro.  When they came to the station for Katelyn’s interview he reminded me of the connection.

Then, as I was surfing Facebook checking out other local bands, I came across Sons of Harlan.  My friend Brad Carrick is a member of this band.  (They’re looking for a drummer and bass player BTW.)  As I’m looking at pics of Brad, because he’s easy on the eyes, I notice pics labeled “Katelyn Marks”.  I pull up the pics and voila, there are Brad, Katelyn and Derek.

Here in the Triad, you can go see a country band one night and the following night head out to hear a rock band and you’ll recognize at least one of the musicians from the night before.  The Indie music scene in the Triad is inclusive.

And that is what this column is all about.  Are you a musician that hails from the Triad?  Do you know a musician that hails from the Triad?  Is your mother’s cousin’s sister’s brother a closet drummer from Pfafftown?  Send them my way.  All are welcome.

PS.  Katelyn Marks is opening for Little Big Town at Johnny and June’s in Winston Salem on March 25th.  Get more info at www.katelynmarks.com
