Sitting down with Lee Brice

The weather was perfect for a summer concert. Although there was a 30% chance of storms, the only storm that invaded De Pere last night was country music star Lee Brice. The handsome and very talented musician made history with his single “Love like Crazy” which now has the title of longest running song on the Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, but “Love like Crazy” isn’t the only song Lee has brought to the table. With other great tunes such as “She ain’t Right”, “Beautiful every Time”, and “Carolina Boys” his music is more than just surface level shenanigans. A signature quality to Lee’s music is how easily people can relate to the stories being told and that ease sets him apart.

A person doesn’t need to go far to witness this phenomenon up close. Dozens of comments can be seen whenever you visit Youtube and view videos to his songs. Both official and fan-made videos are filled with commentary from fans connecting with the words and expressing how much the song touched their lives. One fan even said he was going to sing the song "Beautiful You" to his girlfriend and then propose to her. There is something to be said about relating with an audience through music on that deep of a level. I had the opportunity to sit down with Lee yesterday evening to find out a little more about him and how the creative juices flow.

J: You are currently working on your next album. What can you tell me about the content? Is there any sort of particular theme or subject?

L: It’s very varied. It is inspired by songs about and to the ladies, but it also has songs on it that have deeper meanings and reach out to the world.

J: The first single is set for release in the next couple of months. Are there definitive dates for the single and the album to come out? What about certain songs for the single?

L: No definitive time, but the goal is September. We’re finishing up the songs and then we decide what songs will be released as singles. The album is slated for the middle of next year or fall. However, if the singles do really well, the album release may be moved up.

J: How many tracks can fans expect on the new album?

L: If it was my choice it’d be 15, but it will probably be narrowed down to 12 or 13.

J: All creative people create differently. Some jot ideas down in a journal. Some go from inspiration and suddenly ‘have’ to complete it right away. How do your creations come about?

L: When I was younger and I was inspired I had to grab my guitar right away and write. Then when I got to Nashville I had to write whether there was inspiration or not. Now while on the road it is a combination of the two and I write whenever I am able.

J: Are the songs you write always about your life experiences or simply concepts of them?

L: Sometimes it comes from a very true place. The song “A Picture of Me” comes from that place. But then there are songs like “Love like Crazy” which was written by others, but still touches people deeply. I had an older gentlemen approach me after a concert and tell me how much that song meant to him.

J: What is music to you? Some musicians describe it as a person all its own; how would you describe it?

L: Music is the deepest part of me. The first memory I have before I could even talk was sitting at the upright piano. Music is me. It’s the biggest part of me other than my little boy.
