Sips Bistro visits Rhone for wine and Humboldt for beer at weekend events

Modesto's Sips Bistro and Wine Shop offers very different experiences, from different parts of the world, at tasting events this weekend.

On Friday 4/16, the "Friday Night Flights" will feature wines from France's Rhone Valley. Bill Rehling will be pouring a 2007 Ogier Heritage Cotes du Rhone Blanc, a 2004 Pont d'Avignon Cotes du Rhone Rouge, a 2006 Clos de L'Oratoire Chateauneuf du Pape and a 2005 E Guigal Cote Rotie into the flights. As always, small plates and appetizers are available for purchase to accompany the tasting. The flights are $16 per person, and are poured from 5-8 pm. Take 10% off the purchase of all the wines in tonight's flight.

Beer, and specifically microbrews, are the featured at Saturday 4/17's tasting. Selections from Eureka's Lost Coast Brewery will be sampled, including Great White, Alley Cat, Indica IPA, Down Town Brown and 8 Ball Stout. This tasting is from 2-8 pm, and the cost is $5 per person. Enjoy a 10% discount on the beers poured at this event.

Sunday 4/18 is Sips' weekly champagne brunch. This week's menu features the choice of a grilled Portabella and cheddar or plain cheddar omelet, and includes a house-made English muffin and a grilled pear, for $6. Brunch is limited, so arrive early! Champagne cocktails ($5) and sparklers and champagne by the glass (prices vary) are also available. And Sundays are always free corkage at Sips: Buy a bottle of wine in the shop, and Sips waives the corkage fee to enjoy the selection with the meal.

Sips Bistro and Wine Shop is located in the Crossroads Shopping Center, at the corner of Carpenter and Kansas in Modesto. Hours are 11-9 Tuesday through Saturday, and 11-7 on Sunday. Sips is closed Mondays. The phone number is (209) 527-7477.
