Friday night is flight night at Sips Bistro.

For the uninitiated, a flight is a tasting room term for a pouring of three or more wines, grouped together in order to get a feel for breadth or depth. Tasting flights are often intended for the new wine connoisseur, or for those who want to gain greater knowledge of a specific wine varietal or region. Flights are usually smaller pours, ranging from 1-3 ounces for longer flights, a bit more for shorter ones.

This Friday evening, Sips Bistro and Wine Shop will be pouring flights of Chianti. Like France, Italy names wines by region rather than by varietal, and has rules in place that must be followed to use the regional appellation. So while all of wines poured at this event are Chianti, the actual varietals poured may vary. That said, for a wine to retain the name "Chianti," it must contain at least 80% Sangiovese grape--among other legal requirements. So expect a lot of Sangiovese taste amongst the wines being poured:

  • 2005 Da Vinci Riserva

  • 2005 Banfi Riserva

  • 2004 Ruffino Classico

  • 2004 Marchese Antinori Classico Riserva

This event is $15 per person, and there is a 10% discount on all tasted wines purchased. All flights are also served with a selected "appe-teaser."

Sips Bistro and Wine Shop is located in the Crossroads Shopping Center, 901 N Carpenter Rd Suite 39 in Modesto. Sips is open 11-9 Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11-7 on Sundays, and is closed on Mondays. The telephone number is (209) 527-7477.

When not imbibing, he can be found watching classic cinema and working on his first novel. William...
