A recent report said that images were being shopped showing Justin Bieber and friends Lil Za and Lil Twist surrounded by sizzurp. With that, TMZ went straight to the source, so to speak, of Three 6 Mafia rapper DJ Paul, famous for his song "Sippin' on Some Syrup." His reply, posted on Saturday, serves as a stark warning to Bieber.
Caught in Las Vegas, Paul was asked about the photos circulating showing Bieber surrounded by what appear to be double cups and codeine, the signature signs of sizzurp, and he was quite clear: Justin Bieber is taking a real chance.
Paul said (video embedded):
I can't say don't do [sizzurp] because I did my rounds with it. But I stay away from it these days because I had a lot of friends that passed away from it. It's dangerous if you do too much of it.
He then softened his opinion somewhat with another statement:
But everything's dangerous if you do too much of it. Sex. Water.
It is true that someone can die of water intoxication.
When asked whether or not Bieber's new BFFs Lil Za and Lil Twist are bad influences, Paul said,
Nah, friends are friends. It's just a phase they're going through.
Sizzurp, for those unaware, is one of the numerous slang terms used for a drug concoction popular in the hip-hop community. Wikipedia says:
Its main ingredient is prescription-strength cough syrup containing codeine and promethazine. Cough syrup is typically mixed with ingredients such as Sprite soft drink or Mountain Dew and pieces of Jolly Rancher candy. The purplish hue of purple drank comes from dyes in the cough syrup.
There are numerous slang terms for the mix, including purple drank, sizzurp, lean, syrup, drank, barre, purple jelly, Texas tea, and Tsikuni.
Codeine is a narcotic, and a controlled substance like marijuana (although many believe pot should be legalized). Wikipedia points to some reason Bieber might want to be careful if he wants to maintain his fan-friendly body. According to the site, some users report that the large amount of sugar in sizzurp causes weight gain, tooth decay, and other issues.
