A Florida man is presumed dead after his bedroom was swallowed up by a giant sinkhole. The man’s brother spoke with Fox News live on Friday, March 1, 2013 and described the agony he went through trying to get to his brother after he was swallowed up by the sinkhole and screaming.
According to the Los Angeles Times Friday, late Thursday night Jeff Bush, 36, was in bed when a sinkhole suddenly sucked his entire bedroom into the ground. His brother, Jeremy Bush, tried to dig his brother out of this hole but the dirt started falling in on him. Jeremy said all he could see was the edge of the bed and mattress as he tried to get to his brother.
It was like Jeff fell into an abyss as other relatives joined Jeremy to try to dig Jeff out, but they couldn't get to him. Jeremy said when police and rescue workers got there they made him leave the area because it was so unstable.
The Tampa home was so unstable that rescuers also had to leave the house. They continued the search with sophisticated electronic devices, but no sign of life was detected. Jeremy and four others inside the house escaped the sinkhole, including a 2-year-old child.
Jeremy said he first heard a loud crash and then his brother started screaming. When Jeremy got to his brother’s bedroom, all he could see was part of the mattress sticking up in the dirt. While a death from a sinkhole in this area of Florida is rare, sinkholes are not rare in this area of Hillsborough County. Jeff Bush is presumed dead today and the family is waiting for the body to be uncovered so they can have "closure," Jeremy told Fox News live.
