A huge sinkhole appeared in a Guatemala intersection. The picture shows a very deep hole that is similar to other sinkholes that have appeared in the area. In 2007 Guatemala had a sinkhole deep enough that the Statue of Liberty would have fit into it.
Gizmodo reports, ""This can't be real" was my first thought. Then I checked the source: The Guatemalan government. What you are looking at here is a sinkhole that just appeared in the Zone 2 of Ciudad de Guatemala. And it's very real."
The New York Times reports, "This astonishingly unnerving photograph was posted today on the Flickr.com feed of the Guatemalan goverment and shows a seemingly bottomless sinkhole that opened up on Sunday in Guatemala City as a swath of Central America was drenched by tropical storm Agatha."
The sinkholes in Guatemala are typically deep and narrow. Many areas have narrow, broad sinkholes similar to the sinkhole in Saint Jude, Canada that was reported earlier this month.
