In past columns, I have covered and encouraged anti-Valentine’s Day events for those without a lover this season. But this year we are going to look at it in a different light and see what I can come up with for singles in the city in 2013. Look at it this way, you can meet like-minded people, have fun and maybe make a new friend!
• Inclusive dinner parties
This seems to be all the rage this year. Having a few single friends over for dinner with your coupled friends will certainly keep everyone entertained. Or better yet, throw yourself or someone you love a bring a friend party. Remember someone else’s trash is someone else’s treasure.
• Go to Love Park
Hang out with your best friends, family, pet, coworkers or even a random stranger and take pictures in front of Love Park. Because not every form of love has to be the romantic kind, you can still find happiness in the little things. Silly string helps too.
• 3rd Annual Valentine’s Day Singles Run
For a day of fun that does not involve drowning your single sorrows, take a run through the city. Then enjoy a happy pint with your fellow adrenaline lovers afterwards. Sign up at www.philadelphiarunner.com/vdayrun
• Free Library of Philadelphia Speed Dating
Take the scary factor out of speed dating and do it with your fellow dorks. Bring a book so you have something to either discuss or argue about. Best news yet, it’s free! Register with firstname.lastname@example.org. Sign up at www.freelibrary.org
• The Vagina Monologues
Sometimes making life a bit awkward for yourself is the best way to break out of a rut. Not only that, but these ladies are raising funds while informing. Seems like a win-win to me. Check out www.upennvday.org for more info.
• “The Ex-Files” StorySlam
One of the best and most cathartic ways to clear your ex cobwebs out of your head is to go on a verbal tirade in front of a crowd of people. Tell is like it is and work that prose. Details at www.philly.worldcafelive.com/
• Pre-Valentine’s Day Cupid Singles Event
Because no list is complete without the uncomfortable 8 minute dating concept, I give you speed dating at Ruby Tuesday’s in Wilmington, DE. I know it’s a little out of the city but how far will you for love? Just have an oversized cocktail first! For a nice savings, use code 8mdlisah20748 for first timers.
