Rainier— A fatal single vehicle crash on the eastbound off ramp from Highway 30 to the Lewis and Clark Bridge killed a Longview, Wash., man on Jan. 10, according to a press release from the Oregon State Police.

The crash occurred just before 11:26 p.m., when the Rainier Police Department requested that members of the Oregon State Police report to the scene. A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim, Mark Ross Vanzanten, 41, of Longview, had been traveling eastbound and took the off ramp at a rate of speed that was high for the sharp left curve he was approaching.

Vanzanten missed the curve. His 2002 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck continued traveling straight and hit the rock face embankment and rolled onto its top. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police say that Vanzanten was not using safety restraints at the time of the crash.

Personnel from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and Rainier Police and Fire Departments assisted at the scene. The Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office assisted with notifying Vanzanten’s family of his death.
