When a Target commercial aired during the 2012 Grammys that featured a young girl singing “Rolling in the Deep” on a city bus, backed up by her female friends, I didn’t think too much about it. It caused me to rewind back my DVR for some inexplicable reason, but the short spot didn’t have much of a lasting impact outside of the fleeting “it’s cute” thought.
Turns out, that commercial is kind of a big deal.

The young girl singing in the Target ad is Denise Bestman, who is part of the PS22 Chorus (Public School 22) in Graniteville on Staten Island, New York. They’ve done “Rolling in the Deep” before in a prior YouTube video, something that helped them land the Target commercial on Grammy night.
It’s a very cool story. If you missed the Grammys, check out the short 30-second spot to your left.
