Singer Whitney Houston dead at age 48

Singer Whitney Houston has passed away at the age of 48.

TMZ reports paramedics were called to the Beverly Hilton Saturday when Houston was found unresponsive in her hotel room. TMZ says a member of Whitney's entourage found her in her room and called hotel security - who then dialed 911.

Police arrived to the scene within minutes and fire department EMT's were already there on another call. According to TMZ, paramedics performed CPR on Houston but were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead at 3:55 PM.

Kristen Foster, Houston's publicist said the singer had died, but gave no further information.

Houston battled drug addiction for years. She went go to rehab twice before she declared herself drug-free in 2010. But in the interim, she missed concert dates, was stopped at an airport because of drugs, and had several publicized meltdowns.

Houston won two Emmys, six Grammys, 30 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards during her record-breaking career. Her album "Whitney" was the first female album to ever debut at #1 on the Billboard Charts. She has sold 200 million albums worldwide.

Houston leaves behind her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, who she had with former husband Bobby Brown. Houston and Brown were married from 1992-2007 and lived in Atlanta. At the time, Brown taped a Bravo reality show in Atlanta called “Being Bobby Brown” which also featured Houston.
