Houston had a tumultuous marriage to fellow singer Bobby Brown, and could not escape rumors of drug use in recent years.

According to ABC News, in a 2002 interview with Diane Sawyer she said “The biggest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy.”

Houston was the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston and the cousin of 1960's music icon Dionne Warwick. She was also the goddaughter of 'The Queen of Soul' Aretha Franklin.
