Carmen Carter, the amazing background singer on “Dancing with the Stars,” spoke to Examiner.com on Sept. 14 for an exclusive interview about Monday’s big season premiere, the new cast, and what fans can expect this time around. As a show insider, she provided scintillating scoop on “DWTS,” what she’s been up to during the hiatus, and what’s on the horizon.
Carmen Carter’s musical career has been undeniably eventful and exciting. She’s captivated audiences with her amazing and soulful voice since season one of “Dancing with the Stars.” However, what fans don’t know is that Carmen is probably one of the most recognizable voices in Hollywood. Along with performing on “DWTS,” Carmen can also be heard on “Family Guy,” “American Dad,” “South Park,” “King of the Hill,” “King of Queens,” “Ally McBeal,” “Friends," “Married with Children,” and “Boston Legal." In addition, Carmen sang the theme song on “Moesha,” “Sister Sister,” “Touched by an Angel,” “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper,” “Strong Medicine,” “The Strip,” “Hercules,” “Teacher’s Pet,” and “PB & J Otter.”
On top of her regular TV work, Carmen Carter has also made on and off camera contributions to the big screen with her performances in “Nutty Professor II," “Meet The Fockers," “The Comebacks," “Déjà vu," “John Q," “Big Momma’s House," “Men of Honor,” plus 20+ other movies. Carter provided background vocals to music giants Michael Buble, Whitney Houston, Barbara Streisand, Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, Lionel Ritchie, Julian Lennon, Peabo Bryson, Brandy, John Tesh, Kimberly Locke, and many others. Calling Carmen Carter busy is a huge understatement. She’s a musical force who packs a powerful punch in Hollywood.
Over the summer, the powerhouse did voice-over work on Disney cartoons “Gravity Falls,” “Phineas & Ferb,” and “Fish Hooks.” She also landed an exciting role on Frank Darabonts’ upcoming TNT series “Lost Angels” with Jon Barenthal, who plays Shane on “The Walking Dead.” She hopes to parlay the appearance into a recurring role. “I’m just growing and evolving as I get older,” Carmen stated during our exclusive interview.
Concerning the new season and cast of “Dancing with the Stars,” Carmen said that she’s excited about the changes. “Whoever is behind the scenes keeping fans intrigued is brilliant,” she stated excitedly. “They know exactly what they’re doing and I trust them.”
For the new season, “DWTS” is moving to a one-night format. Despite a cut in pay, Carmen is enthusiastic about the future. “I think the show’s going to be really good this season,” she said. She described the cast, including judges Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba, as well as hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke Charvet, as “one big happy family.” Carmen is also excited about the new cast, especially 74-year-old Valerie Harper. “I’ve connected with her so much,” Carmen stated. “She’s so optimistic about her diagnosis! What a great role model! She has a piece of my heart.” Carmen was by her friend’s bedside when she died of colon cancer. “It changed my life,” she explained. That’s why she is so drawn to Harper and her positive message of hope. “Everyone has a right to be down, but you have to get up and move forward.” Apparently, Valerie Harper shares the same sentiment.
