Singer, actress, vocal director Lynn Paulson speaks of acting in a Ten-Minute Play Festival

Lynn Pauslon retired two years ago from her long-standing gig as a music teacher in the White Bear Lake School District. Since then she has volunteered for the Minnesota Opera, judged at Hennepin Trust, continues to give voice lessons, has been vocal director at least three theatres, had a starring role in Lakeshore Players Once Upon a Mattress and was a reader for Lakeshore Players Annual Ten-Minute Play Festival.

After volunteering as a reader for the Ten-Minute Play Festival, Lynn decided she would audition this year. Lynn Paulson spoke about the experience of rehearsing a ten-minute play.

What is your role in the Festival? Have you done the Festival before?

I am in the play, "Splendid, Just Splendid" and play "the Playwrite". I have not previously been IN the Festival, though I have served on the committee that reads and selects the submitted scripts.

What attracted you to the Festival?

I've enjoyed watching the production the past few years. Theatre friends have been in these plays and it looked like so much fun! Reading all the scripts, while serving on the committee, really made me want to audition and be a part of the production.

Tell me something about the play your doing - what will audiences think of their ten minutes with the play?

"Splendid, Just Splendid" is made up of 4 interesting characters whose plans don't proceed "as planned" and some humorous turnabout ensues. The Playwrite (me) steps in to give the situation a new twist. I think the audience will enjoy the characters, the humor and the outcome very much!

Any anecdotes or tales from the rehearsal process?

Not really - but our cast has good comaraderie. As often happens, some unintended "bits" turned out to be quite funny, and were kept in the final rendition.

What's up for you next?

I'm always looking for suitable shows, mostly musicals, to audition for. Another singer and I are in the process of putting together a vocal recital. It will be a programme of duets, all with a "humorous twist". Date and place have yet to be determined. I will do the vocal direction & arranging for "All Wrapped Up", an annual holiday production by MNPerformDance, a Richfield production company. It is staged at Maplewood Community Center. A portion of the proceeds are donated to a designated metro area social service program. This will be my 3rd year of involvement with this production.
