Singapore, sometimes referred to as Lion City, is an island country located in Southeast Asia. Singapore Island, the largest of the 63 islands that make up Singapore, is a thriving and prosperous area featuring a population of 5 million. It is also the busiest port in the world. Those looking for excitement and adventure when traveling should consider taking a vacation in this interesting and engaging part of the world.

Activities and Attractions

Despite the fact that it is a small island, Singapore offers a surprisingly high number of golf courses for those who enjoy this activity. Visitors who are partial to the excitement of gaming will be pleased to discover that Singapore is also home to two casino resorts which foreign visitors can enter free of charge. Swimmers will find the island an ideal vacation destination as well, as it has more public pools per square mile than any other country in the world, most of which are operational 365 days a year and feature poolside bars or cafes.

Built in 1965, the Empress Place Museum is a must-see for anyone vacationing in Singapore. A perfect place to escape the heat and humidity, the museum boasts 10 thematic galleries which focus on the development of Asian civilization, religion and culture. It houses exceptional works of art from Sri Lanka, India, China and Southeast Asia. In addition, animal lovers will not want to overlook Singapore's world famous zoo, which is home to an impressive number of animals from all around the world.

Nightlife

Singapore features an exciting and vibrant nightlife. Live entertainment can be found in discos, clubs, bars, night markets and street operas. In addition, vacationers can enjoy stimulating entertainment at one of Singapore's international stage shows or theater productions. Lively clubs and exclusive restaurants can also be found at popular riverside landmarks such as Clarke Quay and Boat Quay.

Shopping

The vast array of goods available at reasonable prices has made Singapore a favorite shopping destination for people of all ages. Visitors can find specialty products such as high quality silverware and china, leather goods, Indian rugs, perfume and unique jewelry. Additionally, many open air markets exist where one can bargain with vendors on the price of various wares.

Weather

Located very close to the Equator, Singapore Island has no distinct seasons, but features an average year-round temperature of 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Sunshine is plentiful in Singapore, although short frequent rain showers are very common. Thunderstorms can also occur almost any time of the year, so it is wise for vacationers to carry an umbrella when sightseeing or going out to dine. The frequent thunderstorms are due to the high humidity that is almost always present on Singapore Island.

Getting Around

Traveling throughout Singapore is not difficult, as the country boasts one of the best public transportation system in the world. Visitors seldom find car rentals necessary, as taxis are reasonably priced and the use of the Singapore rail system is relatively easy.
