The Castro Theatre presents the sing along experience of one of the finest Disney movies of all time — the delightful Disney classic MARY POPPINS. The last weekend of February — Saturday, February 22 and Sunday, February 23, 2014 — and fans are invited to warm up their vocal chords and participate in this much beloved sing along tradition.

Winner of five Oscars including Best Actress and Best Original Song, MARY POPPINS tells the story of the titlular English governess (Julie Andrews) who comes to work for a stuffy banker (David Tomlinson) at the behest of his unhappy children. They soon discover that Mary is not simply a kind caretaker, but that she possesses enchanting magical powers. Along the way, Mary introduces them to a lovable street artist/one-man band/chimney sweep (Dick Van Dyke), and all sorts of adventures ensue that turn the Banks household upside down, ultimately for the good of Mr. Banks and his children.

SING-ALONG MARY POPPINS takes the musical to another level: This special screening is complete with subtitles so the whole audience can sing along — to “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Jolly Holiday,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “Let’s Go Fly a Kite,” and of course, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”

Hosted by Laurie Bushman and friends, the interactive SING-ALONG MARY POPPINS gets the audience in the spirit of cheering on the governess and her umbrella-flying adventures. Movie-goers are encouraged to don their best Mary, Bert the chimney sweep, and Edwardian era-inspired costumes and compete to win prizes in the costume contest. Family-friendly afternoon shows will feature kids in costume on parade.

Each show will be preceded by a 30-minute concert of Disney musical favorites featuring Castro organist David Hegarty on the Castro’s Mighty Wurlitzer.

On Sunday evening, under separate admission, Mary Poppins fans will get an additional treat: Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks starring in the extraordinary, untold backstory of how MARY POPPINS made it to the screen, SAVING MR. BANKS. As Walt Disney comes up against curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer P.L. Travers—who has absolutely no intention of letting her story get mauled by Hollywood—he pulls out all the stops to sway her, only to see the project begin to slip away. But when he reaches into his own childhood, Disney discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt Travers, and together they make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history. John Lee Hancock directs this fascinating tribute to the Disney legacy.
