'Simpsons' pay tribute to Miyazaki and animé in upcoming episode

Many animé fans have seen the classic animated films by acclaimed director, Hayao Miyazaki, but no one ever thought to merge them with the animated world of "The Simpsons" until now.

Some of Springfield's finest will be reimagined as classic Miyazaki characters in "Married to the Blob," set to air on Sunday, Jan. 12 on FOX.

"The Simpsons" will be paying tribute to the master animator and filmmaker in the upcoming episode, "Married to the Blob," with an animation sequence that finds Homer interacting with many of the Springfield residents, reimagined in the forms of some of Miyazaki's classic stories. Such characters include Otto as the Catbus from "My Neighbor Totoro," Patty and Selma Bouvier as witches like the title character from "Kiki's Delivery Service," and even a four-legged walking Kwik-E-Mart, which pays homage to the moving home in "Howl's Moving Castle."

In this particular episode, Comic Book Guy, the overweight and snobby owner of the Android's Dungeon and Baseball Card Shop, falls in love with a manga artist named Kumiko, and when their announcement of getting engaged doesn't sit well with Homer, he does everything in his power to make sure they have the "worst breakup ever."

You can catch "Married to the Blob" when it airs on FOX's "Animation Domination" on Sunday, Jan. 12 at 8 p.m. EST.
