Possibly the most addicting, delicious chocolate treat that exists is Gardner’s Original Peanut Butter Meltaway®. It’s a creamy, smooth peanut butter dipped in rich chocolate. A tour is given of Gardner’s Candy kitchen to show how the Meltaway® and other chocolates are actually made.
A re-created candy kitchen of the late 1800’s can be visited. The kitchen has candy-making utensils, candy boxes, Easter Bunny molds, and related memorabilia. A 15-minute videotape presents the history of Gardner’s Candy.
Gardner’s Candy started as a one-store family business in 1897 at Tyrone Pennsylvania. Some have described their taste-tempting candies as “simply out of this world.” They have expanded into a chain of 19 retail stores in the state today.
All confections are produced in their candy kitchen in Tyrone using only fresh, high quality ingredients following their original recipes. They produce over 100 varieties of sweet treats including rich, creamy chocolates, fresh fruit creams, toasted coconut, caramels, and roasted nuts. Their best-known confection is the Original Peanut Butter Meltaway®.

Tyrone with a population of 5,477 is 15 miles northeast of Altoona, and 26 northeast of State College. It is on Little Juanita River, along Bald Eagle Creek at the base of Bald Eagle Mountain. It’s located on US 99 at the intersection of routes 220 and route 453. Tyrone was called "The Hub of the Highways", due to the intersection of four railroads with three main highways within its limits.
Tyrone is a 4 hour drive of 260 miles from Rochester NY. First drive south on Route 15 into Pennsylvania past Williamsport. Then drive west on US 80 to route 220 south to Tyrone.
Altoona PA is the tenth highest inhabited city in the state with a population of 46,320. It is in the Allegheny Mountains, at the base of Brush Mountain. The city was founded in 1849 by the Pennsylvania Railroad and incorporated in 1854. The railroad played a major role in its existence employing about 15,000 at its peak. The city is currently working to recover from industrial decline. The name Altoona was derived from the Latin word altus meaning high.
State College is a college town of 42,034 population with the Penn State campus and its 40,000 students. It began in 1855 an agricultural college that became Pennsylvania State University in 1874. State College has the lowest unemployment rate in the state. Its largest single employer is Penn State with over 23,000 employees in 2011.
