A simple vote on gun control is what President Barack Obama asked for in the State of the Union. The gun control debate has been a divisive one, but Obama used the stage to ask for a vote on Tuesday night (Feb. 12).
While making a demand of Congress to act on gun control, the president stated, "Gabby Giffords deserves a vote. The families of Newtown deserve a vote. The families of Aurora deserve a vote. The families of Oak Creek, and Tucson, and Blacksburg, and the countless other communities ripped open by gun violence — they deserve a simple vote."
This was the point that Obama tried to express at the end of his speech, urging Congress to take some action while hammering home examples of gun violence that are in the front of people's minds. He ended his list of examples by giving the succinct statement, "If Congress won't act soon to protect future generations, I will."
While many other issues were addressed during the 2013 State of the Union Address, gun violence and gun control laws are the real hot topics in front of Congress at the moment. It looks like President Obama wants a simple vote on gun control before he feels that it is necessary to make a decree of his own.
