Simple salt eye rinse solution for pink eye and other eye irritations (Video)

As mentioned in "Pretty in pink? Not with pink eye (conjunctivitis)" pink eye is an inflammation of the outermost layer of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. Conjuntivitis produces bloodshot eyes, itching, burning, watery, swollen eyes.

Conjunctivitis often clears up by itself without treatment, and eye drops or a saline solution may help ease symptoms. A trip to the doctor is often in order, but some chose to treat pink eye at home.

The recipe for a home-made salt rinse for infected, irritated eyes is simple being made up of salt and water. Distilled water is recommended since tap water can contain chemicals and impurities, but many people use plain tap water. Boil one cup of water with one half teaspoon (up to one teaspoon) of salt and let the liquid cool completely before using.

Use an eye cup or an eye dropper to rinse the eye with the cooled salt solution. The solution can be used as an eye rinse and also as a nasal solution for sinus and allergy issues.

Rinse the affected eye several times a day. After rinsing, a gentle eye cream can help soothe the delicate skin of the eyelids but should be kept out of the eyes to avoid further irritation.

After a day or two, boil another batch of solution so the first one does not become contaminated with impurities or bacteria. Salt is a natural antibiotic and kills bacteria on contact, so a salt-based eye wash does not attract bacteria.

To be on the safe side, consult your doctor before using a homemade eye rinse. If the eye does not clear up in 2 or 3 days or if symptoms get worse, seek immediate medical attention.
