Simple Changes in Color and Texture in a Home Brings Warmth, Ambiance and Space

What are the feelings that come over you when you enter your home or a particular room in that home? Do you feel warm and comfortable or does it make you feel uneasy or cold? You may not realize what is causing that feeling but the majority of the time it's the colors of the walls, flooring and the furnishings.

Problem:

A brightly lit room that's painted or paneled in a dark color will seem cramped and busy. You will notice any scratches or imperfections in the walls or woodwork and any discoloration in the rugs or furnishings. Instead of appreciating the size of the room and the beautiful sunlit aura, you will be drawn to the negative aspects of the room.

Solution:

Change the colors to light neutral tones and light woodwork and replace the flooring and furnishings to lighter colors, bright accents and a variety of textures the room will blossom into a warm, wonderful place to be.

Problem:

Check out your bedrooms. Do the feel inviting, relaxing and cozy? No? Well maybe it's the bright yellow paint or the busy bedding and drapes. Your bedroom is a place to relax, not a place to be stimulated by bright colors and confusing prints.

Solution:

Cool colors such as pale greens and blues tend to calm and relax. Solid colored fabrics and soft mono-colored patterns won't fight for your attention. Soft flowing fabrics and fluffy pillows smooth out the corners and angles in the room. Soft but adequate lighting is all a bedroom needs. If you need more light, you need to be in a room other than you bedroom.

Problem:

When you enter your bathroom (either your own or you hall bath) and close the door, does it feel like it’s closing in on you? Is there a hectic wall paper surrounding you or a dark crimson closing in on you from all sides? A bathroom should say two things, Simple and Clean.

Solution:

Installing good lighting, hard, easy to clean surfaces and neutral colors in a bathroom will make it seem larger, cleaner and safer to use. Simplicity in a small room seems to expand the space. One dominate color will make the room seem larger and less engulfing. Smooth surfaces are easier to maintain in a room that has to scream "Clean" to both family and visitors.

Problem:

Does that kitchen seem drab and out of date but you can't afford granite counters and new appliances? Here again color and texture can come to the rescue.

Solution:

A coat of paint on the walls and refinishing those drab, dark cabinets can bring an older kitchen to life. A ceramic tile back-splash will modernize and update and is easy on the pocket book. Ceramic tile floors are easy to maintain and will bring color and serviceability to your kitchen.

To Summarize; You need to take each room in your home into separate consideration as to it’s use, it’s functionality and the message it sends to those who enter it. Ask yourself these questions: 1. Is this a public or private portion of the house? 2. What is this room used for? 3. What message do I want to convey in this room? 4. How can I make this room do and say what I want it to? When you have answered these questions, you are on your way to deciding what to do with the room and what color palate you need to use to accomplish it. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN WITH IT!
