It’s back-to-school time almost everywhere and parents should be concerned about the wellbeing of their children. Simon Malls has established a program in conjunction with Circle of Respect and the National Crime Prevention Council, by which our youth, that visit the malls, will be reminded of how they dress, how they conduct themselves and how they treat their neighbor.
It has been said by Sec. Of State Hilliary Clinton, that “It takes a village” “to raise a child” and as this old African/Indian/American proverb indicates; it does take more than just parents to guide children today so Simon Malls are helping each child to succeed through their “conduct policies”.
According to the ‘Are You In It?’ program by the NCPC: “80% of adolescents report being bullied or cyber-bullied at some time during their school years; 40% of teens report being a victim of cyber-bullying”. Articles have been written about the effect that cyberspace can have on individuals today from cyber-bullying to the negative aftermath of sexting. You’ve got to watch what ‘laundry you put out into the street’.
Among the rules that are enforced in the Simon (more choices) Malls, include:
- Offensive language or yelling is not allowed
- Apparel that is offensive or conceals an individual’s identity is prohibited
- Blocking or impeding traffic within the shopping center is not permitted
- Running or behavior that could endanger others is prohibited
- Loitering is not allowed
- Smoking, in any form, is prohibited inside the Shopping Center
This writer finds the “new look” of the baggy, below the butt, no belt wearing, showing one’s underwear and ‘plumbers smile’ - to be very offensive. As reported by the New York Times, some states and some school districts have tried to ban “saggy pants”, nevertheless some have won the battle and others are still trying to pass laws against the look.
There is probably a mall somewhere in your area that has enforced some sort of community consideration codes. Jacksonville Florida is blessed to have five major malls (Avenues, River City, Regency Square, Orange Park and St. Johns Town Center) that covers the north, south, east and the west sides of the city. Three Simon Malls (Avenues, Orange Park & St. Johns Town Center) are striving to help children become outstanding citizens through some much appreciated regulations. Take a look at the “Trends and Tudes” written by Chris Moessner, Youth & Education Research Director of Harris Interactive Inc.; and learn the signs of Cyberbullying and other concerns.

Good to see that some organization outside schools is trying to help kids socialize in the correct way. Parents and schools need help as indicated from Hillary Clinton's comment included in your fine article.
Thank you Ted for your comment and faithfulness.
You are right bullying needs to stop my examiner friend Cindy Springsteen who is the
Long Island Parenting Teens Examiner is trying to shine a light on this subject. Too many kids are committing suicide, feeling depressed and dropping out of schools as a result of bullying. Another great article Ms. "V"!
I hope your friend Cindy will link her story with mine. Thanks Rachel ;)
This sounds like an interesting program.
It really is and it's so much better to go shopping and not have to see and hear things that are questionable.
Back from 3 great weeks in England, with family.
Welcome home Susan ;)
It's nice to know that Simon Malls are taking a stand to promote positive behaviors in their shopping environments. More people/businesses would do well to imitate this policy.
BTW the video for the Ted Dekker article has finally shown up. Thanks for commenting.
Thank you Cindi and I went to see the video ;) Good job !
