Simon Cowell, known as the "tell it like it is" judge on American Idol, is now judging another talent show that is reputed to be a better "Idol." Fox television is premiering the 2-hour episode of the X Factor tonight, September 21, 2011 at 8:00 p.m. ET/7:00 central time. The show is owned and operated by Simon Cowell. Tomorrow night will be part two of the premiere. It may come as no surprise that The X Factor is a huge singing competition, much like American Idol.
Instead of winning $1 million, the winner will win $5 million. Not too shabby. In addition, Paula Abdul, Cowell's former co-judge and sparring partner on Idol, will be joining him on The X Factor. Music mogul, L. A. Reid and Cheryl Cole join Cowell and Abdul for the first auditions, then singer Nicole Scherzinger replaces her. (No one has explained why the replacement).
Idol has finished No. 1 in prime-time TV ratings for the past eight years, turning Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and others into major recording artists. Will The X Factor do better than Idol? Will fans of Cowell's return in droves to see him on this new singing competition show? Only time will tell. But, I, for one, am betting on it.
What do you think?
