Simon Cowell's Syco Entertainment launches talent contest 'Ultimate DJ'

"The X Factor" creator/executive producer Simon Cowell has inked a deal to launch a TV talent contest for electronic/dance music (EDM) DJs called "Ultimate DJ." The show is being produced in a partnership between Syco Entertainment (which is co-owned Cowell and Sony Music), SFX Entertainment and T-Mobile U.S.

SFX made the announcement via press release on April 29, 2014. There is no word yet on when and where "Ultimate DJ" will be seen, but it most likely will be a Web series. It also hasn't been announced yet how people can enter the contest.

Cowell said in the press release: “We have been developing this concept for a while but our partnership with SFX has been a real game-changer for this format. It made complete sense for us to collaborate with SFX with their access to the best up-and-coming DJs and their great marketing platform to build new DJ talent. And I’m delighted to have T-Mobile on board with their brilliant vision and innovation.”

Syco senior producer Kelly Belledegrun added, “This show will represent a visual and musical revolution and we can't wait to showcase this to the world with our exciting new partners."

SFX Entertainment chairman/CEO Robert FX Sillerman commented, “Bringing EMC [electronic music culture] to the world is our goal. And building a TV franchise in the USA is a key part of that strategy. It’s always exciting to work with Simon Cowell, and the creative power of the Syco organization is undisputed. They are the perfect partners for our vision. T-Mobile president/CEO John Legere stated, "In the same way we’re revolutionizing wireless to empower customers everywhere, we look forward to working with Syco and SFX to showcase and promote a fresh, new generation of DJ/producer talent,” said “Our customers spend a lot of time listening to music on their devices, so you can expect us to take on entertainment and music in our typical bold and aggressive, Un-carrier style.”

This isn't the first time that Cowell's Syco Entertainment has tried to launch a TV talent contest for electronic/dance music DJs. In 2012, it was announced that Syco had teamed up with Overbrook Entertainment (whose co-owners include Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith) for a similar contest, but those plans ultimately fell apart.
