Simon Cowell is one of those celebrities who seemingly continue to have to address rumors surrounding his sexuality. The latest claims came at the end of last week during the trial of former N-Dubz singer Tulisa Contostavlos in a London court. The “X Factor” boss’s name was part of allegations made by Contostavlos’ personal assistant Gareth Varely who claims that Cowell has slept with several of his friends.
Cowell’s sexuality being brought up in the case seemed a bit strange and only added to previous rumors the former “American Idol” judge had denied. Representatives of Cowell couldn’t comment on the allegations during the trial for legal reasons, but have responded in a statement released Monday following the end of the trial in which Contostavlos was cleared of a cocaine charge.
In the statement, Cowell’s rep said, “In 2014 the question of whether someone is or is not gay is antiquated. (As it happens he isn’t, though if he were, he would simply have said so.) However, the issue was the false suggestion made by Mr. Varey that Simon – who is renowned for his honesty and candidness – had thus not been truthful in the public arena and this is what we have been obliged to clarify.”
A celebrity coming out as gay after years of denial is nothing new, but Cowell has stated before that he would have no problem coming out as gay if he was. Furthermore, Cowell’s name was brought up during the trial without him being consulted beforehand. The rep acknowledged this stating, “Simon was referred to during the trial without forewarning, resulting in widespread media coverage of untrue claims regarding his private life.”
As a new daddy, Cowell is focused on fatherhood and is also busy professionally. According to Deadline.com Tuesday, he will be involved with One Direction’s upcoming film of their current “Where We Are” tour. Cowell discovered the popular boy band on “X Factor UK” in 2010. Popular band member Harry Styles has had his own share of gay rumors.
