On Aug. 24, 2013, Simon Cowell and his pregnant lover Lauren Silverman were photographed in public together for the first time since her pregnancy made the news. Paparazzi photos show Cowell and Silverman smiling and holding hands while walking on a beach in St. Tropez, France, on Aug. 24, 2013. Silverman is wearing a see-through swimsuit coverup over a bikini, and her pregnancy is showing in the pictures.
The photos come four days after Cowell publicly admitted for the first time that he is having his first child with Lauren Silverman, a New York socialite who got pregnant with Cowell's child while married to her first husband, Andrew Silverman. Cowell told the BBC in an interview at the world premiere of "One Direction: This Is Us" in London on Aug. 20, 2013: "I'm proud to be a dad. It's something I hadn't thought of before, but now I know I feel good about it ... Things are changing in my life right now, for the better. She [Lauren]'s a very special girl."
Cowell made this statement the week after Lauren Silverman reached a divorce settlement with her husband Andrew Silverman, who filed for divorce in July 2013.
TMZ reported on Aug. 14, 2013, that Lauren is getting about $2 million in the divorce settlement and joint custody of Adam Silverman, the 7-year-old son whom she has with Andrew. In his divorce filing, Andrew (who is 37 and a New York-based real-estate mogul) had been seeking sole custody of Adam, and Lauren's adultery with Cowell was named as the reason for the divorce. Lauren and Andrew Silverman were married in 2003, the same year that they met Cowell.
In addition, TMZ reported that Lauren (who is 36) will remain based in New York to be close to her son Adam. Cowell (who is 53 and has never been married) does not have a home in New York (he spends most of his time in London, Los Angeles and Miami), so it calls into question how much time Cowell will really be spending with Lauren and his "love child." Unnamed sources close to Cowell have been telling the media that Cowell has no plans to marry or live with Lauren.
The New York Post reported that the Silvermans had a pre-nuptial agreement that guaranteed Lauren a certain amount of money if she stayed married to Andrew for at least 10 years. There was also a "no cheat" clause in the pre-nuptial agreement that lowered Lauren's divorce payout if she cheated on Andrews, according to the Mail on Sunday. The New York Post reported Lauren would have gotten $3 million to $4 million in the divorce if she had received the maximum amount allowed in the pre-nuptial agreement.
Lauren's attorneys Robert Cohen and Bernard Clair issued this statement about the divorce settlement: "The matter has been resolved and the parties have moved on."
Meanwhile, Andrew said to TMZ after the divorce settlement was reached: "As I’ve said all along, my priority was resolving this quickly for the sake of our son. Lauren and I both love him very much and I’m looking forward to starting a new chapter in our lives."
The Daily Mirror reported that Cowell plans to buy Lauren a $16 million mansion in Beverly Hills (where he owns several properties), but given Lauren's decision to remain based in New York, it's possible he could buy her property in that state, or she could be somewhat bicoastal, depending how her relationship with Cowell goes and the visitation rights that he gets for the child.
The Silvermans had been longtime friends of Cowell, and were so close to him that he often invited them to go on vacations with him.
It has not yet been made public how long Cowell's affair with Lauren had been going on before she got pregnant, but Us Weekly reported that she is due to give birth in February 2014. The New York Post reported that the affair started in 2011, while Us Weekly claims that the affair began in 2009.
E! News reported that actress/singer Carmen Electra, who dated Cowell for a few months in 2012, broke up with Cowell after she found out that Cowell and Lauren Silverman were lovers. An unnamed source told E! News: "Carmen was at Simon's house in L.A. when she literally busted him with Lauren. Simon called her a friend, but there was nothing platonic about what was going on, if you know what I mean. There was no way she was going to stick around and be a third wheel."
On July 31, 2013, when the news broke that Lauren was pregnant with Cowell's child, Cowell was in Los Angeles that week for "X Factor" duties. He then went to a One Direction concert in Las Vegas on Aug. 3, 2013. And he is now reportedly on a month-long vacation in France before he returns to the U.S. in September for his work duties on "The X Factor." Silverman was in New York until Aug. 22, 2013, when paparazzi photos showed her at an airport in Nice, France. Many people correctly assumed that she was in France to rendezvous with Cowell.
As previously reported, Andrew Silverman filed for divorce in July 2013, citing "adultery," with Cowell named as the person having an adulterous affair with Lauren. The divorce filing also says that that Lauren subjected Andrew to "cruel and inhumane" treatment. Lauren reportedly moved out of their marital home in Manhattan in June 2013, and she is now living in nearby Bridgehampton, N.Y.
According to the Sunday Mirror, Lauren Silverman has been telling friends: "I want to be Mrs Cowell." However, Cowell's friends and associates who are speaking anonymously to the media about this situation say that Cowell is not going to marry Lauren, and he does not even want to live with her.
An unidentified source told the Sunday Mirror: "Lauren's been saying that she wants him to get married to her and commit. But Simon is his own man and he's got himself out of awkward spots before. He has a great connection with Lauren so he knows they can make this work.
"Lauren wants to settle down with Simon. She says she wants to be Mrs. Cowell, and wants to bring up their baby together. But for this he needs to leave his playboy lifestyle behind. Simon's determined to do exactly the right thing, with the baby being the foremost priority. But he will not be prepared to give up his friends for anything."
Cowell's inner circle of friends include several of his ex-lovers, such as former '80s pop star Sinitta, former nude model Jackie St. Clair, "Extra" correspondent Terri Seymour (who was Cowell's girlfriend from 2002 to 2008) and former "American Idol" makeup artist Mezhgan Hussainy, who was engaged to Cowell from 2010 to 2011. St. Clair and Sinitta dated Cowell back in the '80s and knew him long before he became world-famous as a judge on TV talent shows.
Cowell took Sinitta and Hussainy as his dates to the "One Direction: This Is Us" premiere and after-party in London on Aug. 20, 2013.
In a September 2011 interview, Cowell admitted to the Guardian that he has made "palimony" settlement payments to some of his ex-girlfriends (whom he did not name in the interview), so that they could continue in the lifestyle to which they were accustomed. According to published reports, Cowell gave Seymour a Beverly Hills mansion worth about $5 million, while Cowell gave Hussainy a Beverly Hills mansion worth about $8 million.
A U.S. property source who has dealt with Cowell told the Daily Mirror: “Simon has amassed a lot of houses with his fortune and will want to provide for his child. But he seems to give away a house every time he splits from a girlfriend, so he is getting through them more quickly than he thought. He has instructed his advisers to let Lauren have the house, which means she can be nearby but crucially not too close so he can get on with his work and usual lifestyle.”
The Daily Mirror speculates that Lauren will live with her mother at the mansion that Cowell is giving her. The tabloid adds: "It is said to be a 7,265 square-foot home with four bedrooms, ocean views, a digital screening room and a swimming pool. Neighbors include Ringo Starr and Elton John."
An unnamed source commented to the Daily Mirror: “Simon has lots of housing in Beverly Hills all close to each other and now lots of it contain his exes. He doesn’t seem to mind that he could bump into them at any time, but the rate he is going he may need to buy some more.”
According to the New York Post, Lauren Silverman's level of deception in having her affair with Cowell included using her mother as a fake alibi when she was sneaking off for trysts with Cowell. Lauren would tell her husband that she was visiting her mother, but Lauren would really be with Cowell.
As previously reported, one of the people who allegedly is the most upset about Lauren Silverman's pregnancy is former "American Idol" makeup artist Mezhgan Hussainy, who was engaged to Cowell from 2010 to 2011. After she found out that Lauren Silverman was pregnant, Hussainy reportedly confronted Cowell to find out how long the affair was going on, since she suspected that Cowell had cheated on her with Lauren Silverman.
There has been a longtime rivalry between Hussainy and Lauren Silverman, who bear striking physical similarities to each other. The two women look alike enough that tabloids occasionally mistake one woman for the other in paparazzi photos.
In the 2012 unauthorized biography "Sweet Revenge: The Intimate Life of Simon Cowell," Lauren Silverman made disparaging remarks about Hussainy getting engaged to Cowell and had this to say to Andrew when she heard about the Cowell/Hussainy engagement: "The whole thing is wrong." Lauren is described in the book as Cowell's "best friend in New York." She also provided personal photos of her and Andrew on vacation with Cowell.
In paparazzi photos that show Cowell, Hussainy and Lauren Silverman in the same picture, the body language between the two women is almost always tense, even if Andrew Silverman is in the photo too. The Silvermans, Hussainy and some of Cowell's other ex-girlfriends are part of Cowell's circle of friends that he invites to his parties and vacations. A friend of Cowell's hinted to the Daily Mirror that Cowell has a swinger lifestyle that he did not want to be exposed during the Silvermans' divorce proceedings.
Lauren Silverman and Andrew Silverman have not made any public comments that directly mention the adulterous affair that caused Lauren's pregnancy, but they have not denied it either. The only public statements that they and their representatives have made are variations of "This is a private matter." However, since Cowell has now publicly admitted that he is expecting a child with Lauren, he has basically admitted to the affair, since she was married at the time that Cowell impregnated her.
On Aug. 3, 2013, the Daily Mirror reported that after Hussainy found out that Lauren Silverman was pregnant with Cowell's child, she angrily confronted him to find out if he cheated on her with Lauren during the time that Hussainy and Cowell were a couple. Sources told the Daily Mirror that, like a coward, Cowell tried to avoid Hussainy until she went to to his home unannounced to confront him on Aug. 1, 2013.
According to "Sweet Revenge," Cowell (who has admitted in interviews that he can't stay faithful to one woman), Hussainy and Cowell's relationship also started under cheating circumstances, because he reportedly started having a secret affair with her when he was still living with "Extra" correspondent Terri Seymour. Cowell and Seymour were together from 2002 to 2008, and their relationship ended because he didn't want to get married and have children.
Cowell said that he broke up with Hussainy because he thought she was too needy and didn't understand his workaholic ways, according to what Cowell's friend Zeta Graff told a tabloid. Hussainy probably has a different version of events, but she doesn't give interviews, probably because she signed a confidentiality agreement with Cowell.
By all accounts, Lauren Silverman wants to be the No. 1 woman in Cowell's life. It's presumed that she will also financially benefit the most if she is proven to be the mother of Cowell's child. It's highly unlikely that Cowell will publicly admit or deny that he is the father of this child until a paternity test proves who the father is.
Miza Shiman, a Manhattan spa owner who says she and Lauren have been friends for 10 years, had this to say to the Daily Mail about Lauren's relationship with Cowell: "They were close friends and then one day it turned into something else. Lauren didn’t plan any of this. It’s not some kind of trick. I know one thing for sure, they are in love with each other. I hope they will get married and be happy forever.
"She told me she was pregnant with Simon’s baby. She was glowing. I said, 'Lauren, are you happy?' and she said, 'Yes, I’m thrilled.' She told me Simon is happy to have a child. She was a little bit stressed, of course, because it’s a difficult situation. But she is in love and she is happy.
"Lauren never took anything from Simon, she never expected anything. I think that’s why, for Simon, Lauren is special. Women have always been jealous of her. She’s beautiful, she’s married to a millionaire. She has a driver, and a house here [in New York] and in the Hamptons. Andrew is a rich man and she is used to this life."
Lauren's mother has also come to Lauren's defense with statements that she has made to the media. Due to her multiple marriages, Lauren's mother has been identified by various names, including Carole Saland, Carole Eisenberg and Carole Davis. She made this statement to the Daily Mirror: “Lauren isn’t a gold digger. She’s a nice girl from Miami Beach. Her marriage was not a marriage made in heaven, and life goes on. People go on.”
And she is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: "She’s a nice girl. Things happen in life. Her marriage was not a marriage made in heaven. My daughter is a wonderful girl and a wonderful mother."
However, other (unnamed) friends of the Silvermans paint a very different portrait of Lauren. One friend told the New York Post that she is a "gold digger." Another source close to the Silvermans said to the Daily Mail: "Andrew’s parents did not approve of who she was."
Neighbors at the upscale Manhattan building where the Silvermans live also don't think highly of Lauren either. One of the neighbors told the Daily Mail that Lauren is a "diva princess since she met Andrew." Another said, "She is the troublemaker. She is very insecure."
Andrew Silverman's brother Alexander told the New York Post that the selfish, adulterous actions of Cowell and Lauren Silverman are a "betrayal" and a "tragic story."
According to the Daily Mail, Lauren Silverman's wealth comes from marrying rich, since she came from a middle-class background. Her mother Carole Davis (whose last name has also been identified as Eisenberg and Saland, due to her multiple marriages) works in real estate, and her father Steven Davis is an accountant. Her parents are divorced and remarried to other people.
While Silverman's friend Shiman paints a picture of Cowell and Lauren Silverman being madly in love, people in Cowell's camp have not declared that he is in love with her or will marry her. There are also no indications that Cowell is going to live with her either.
One of Cowell's pals told the Daily Mail: "Simon and Lauren are in a relationship, they are very happy – she’s been good for him. They are a couple, and Simon will just pay for their child. He will step up and be a part of the life of the child … but Simon is saying privately that he has absolutely no plans to marry Lauren." Cowell is probably waiting for a paternity test before he publicly claims to be the father of the child that Lauren is due to give birth to in February 2014.
Andrew Silverman's fortune is said to be worth about $95 million, according to Forbes magazine. Cowell's fortune is estimated to be $380 million, according to the Sunday Times Rich List. Between her divorce settlement and child-support payments, Lauren Silverman will be getting millions from these two men.
Sources told the New York Post that Lauren and Cowell began their affair in 2011. The sources also said that she waited until she was married 10 years to Andrew before getting pregnant with Cowell's child, in order to get the guaranteed sum of money in her prenuptial agreement if she stayed married to Andrew for 10 years.
According to the New York Post: "She could get $3 million to $4 million from the prenup with Manhattan real-estate developer Andrew Silverman, but the couple had to be married a decade for the agreement to take effect, friends said. Now that the 10-year deadline has passed, Lauren, pregnant with Cowell’s child, feels free to end her bitter union with Silverman."
“This is just another example of her going for the money,’’ a source in Andrew’s camp told the New York Post.
Lauren Silverman won't have an easy time of it if she plans to make Cowell a one-woman man. In addition to his longtime playboy lifestyle and all the ex-girlfriends he wants to keep in his life, Cowell seems to have doubts that his relationship with Lauren will last, because he has already tried to break things off with Lauren at least once, according to the Sunday Mirror. Sources told the Mirror that Cowell changed his mind after he found out that she was pregnant and getting divorced from her husband.
On Aug. 14, 2013, Andrew Silverman commented to the Mail Online (the website for the Daily Mail) about whether or not he can forgive Lauren and Cowell for their affair: "I'm not in that place right now. I don't know. I'm taking every day at a time, not weeks, not months. It's been a difficult situation, but I think I'm doing the best that I can with the cards that I have been dealt and my priority has been to protect Adam the whole time. We love him really dearly and we want this not to affect his future.
"I'm a private person, we are a very private family. My priority is protecting my son. Me and my wife, we love the kid to death and want to move on and move forward with our life and on to the next chapter. Everything we are doing is for our son, for the best for Adam. It's trying to provide him with as comfortable environment as we can so he can have a normal childhood, so he can grow up and prosper."
Andrew Silverman refused to comment on the divorce settlement, which probably includes a confidentiality agreement that prevents the people involved from publicly discussing certain things.
