Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid ranked on Billboard's 2013 Power 100 list

On Feb. 8, 2013, Billboard magazine revealed its Power 100 list for 2013. "The X Factor" executive producer Simon Cowell is ranked at No. 30, while former "X Factor" U.S. judge Antonio "L.A." Reid (who is chairman/CEO of Epic Records) is ranked at No. 40. The list ranks the executives whom Billboard has determined were the most influential in the U.S. music industry in the past year.

Universal Music Group chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge is ranked at No. 1.

Cowell co-owns Syco Music with Sony Music. One Direction's worldwide breakthrough success in 2012 raised the fortunes of Sony Music labels Syco Music and Columbia Records, which are the U.S. record companies for One Direction. One Direction was often ranked as 2012's best-selling new group in several countries, including the United States. One Direction came in third place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2010, and is currently the biggest-selling act worldwide to emerge from "The X Factor." One Direction's first two albums ("Up All Night" and "Take Me Home") were No. 1 hits in several countries in 2012. According to Sony Music, One Direction sold about 15 million singles, albums and DVDs worldwide by the end of 2012. An estimated 5.5 million of those sales were in the United States.

In 2012, Epic Records struggled to have big hits with its new artists, but one of the exceptions was Cher Lloyd, who came in fourth place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2010. In 2012, Lloyd (who is signed to Syco Music/Epic Records in the U.S.) sold 2 million copies in the U.S. of her first U.S. single, "Want U Back." Her first album, "Sticks & Stones," debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 chart but has not yet been certified gold in the United States. Epic's biggest-selling artists include Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, Ozzy Osbourne and Shakira.

Sony Music is the record-company partner of "The X Factor." Other Sony Music executives ranked on Billboard's 2013 Power 100 list are Sony/ATV Music Publishing chairman Martin Bandier (No. 3), Sony Music chairman/CEO Doug Morris (No. 5), Columbia Records chairman Rob Stringer (No. 15) and Sony Music chief creative officer Clive Davis (No. 30). Sony Pictures Entertainment president of worldwide music Lia Vollack is No. 51 on the list.

As of now, Cowell is the only judge confirmed to be on "The X Factor" U.S. in 2013. Reid was a judge on the show from March 2011 to December 2012. Reid quit "The X Factor" because he said he wanted more time to focus on his job at Epic Records. Britney Spears became a judge on the show in May 2012, and she announced her departure in January 2013. It has not been announced yet if Demi Lovato (who also became a judge on "The X Factor" U.S. in May 2012) will continue to be a judge on the show in 2013.

The replacements for Spears and Reid have not been named yet. The show's entire judging panel for 2013 should be announced by May, when auditions begin in front of the judges. "X Factor" producers, not the judges, select the contestants from preliminary auditions who go on to audition in front of the judges.
