Simon Beaufoy to write ‘Hunger Games’ sequel, Gary Ross to direct

Lionsgate is moving ahead with its “Hunger Games” films well in advance of release of the first movie. “Catching Fire,” the sequel to “Hunger Games” and the second book in in Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, has officially gained its screenwriter and director.

As of Jan. 16, Simon Beaufoy, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of “Slumdog Millionaire,” has been confirmed for the “Catching Fire” screenplay. According to The Wrap, Beaufoy is already working on the script in preparation for a late 2012 production start.

Also on board for “Catching Fire” is director Gary Ross, who is finishing up post-production on “The Hunger Games” and will supervise the script.

Of course, the director and screenwriter are familiar with each other’s work. Beaufoy and Ross worked together on the script for “Hunger Games,” along with screenwriter Billy Ray (“State of Play.”)

And Lionsgate’s jump on the “Hunger Games” sequel isn’t particularly surprising. The studio’s commitment to the franchise is well established. The plan to make “Catching Fire” was announced back in August 2011, while “Hunger Games” was still in production.

“Hunger Games” stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson and Liam Hemsworth are expected to return for the sequel.

Meanwhile, anticipation for the release of “Hunger Games” builds. The movie will be released to theaters nationwide March 23, 2012. “Catching Fire” is slated for a Nov. 23, 2013 release.

Pittsburgh movie-goers and fans of the “Hunger Games” trilogy can see the first film at the film at the AMC Loews Waterfront 22, SouthSide Works Cinema and Waterworks Cinema 10. Look for locations and movie tickets available for online purchase at Fandango.
