Silver spike festival at Southern Arizona Transportation Museum (Photos)

The annual Silver Spike Festival held at the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum celebrates the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in Tucson back in 1880. The event begins with a reenactment of the arrival at 9 a.m. on Sunday, March 17, 2013. This is a free event that will take place in front of Locomotive 1673.

The Silver Spike Festival will include a proclamation by Mayor Jonathon Rothschild and the 4th United States Calvary Regiment Band playing. Those visiting the festival will also have the opportunity to view the original 1880 silver spike and a display of historical transportation methods including ones used by the United States Mail Service.

About the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum: This museum is located in Downtown Tucson at the Train Depot (414 N. Toole Ave). One of the prominent parts of the museum is Locomotive 1673, which was featured in the movie Oklahoma. The regular hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
