Silver lining to 150 dogs confiscated from alleged puppy mill

Last week, more than 150 dogs were turned over to authorities from Dan River Bullies, an alleged puppy mill outside of Winston-Salem.  Animal advocates are now hoping something positive will come out of these dogs’ suffering.

Veterinarians are continuing their assessments of the confiscated animals, finding that many have problems with their eyes, heart, teeth, and skin (Source).  These issues are most likely the result of unsanitary living conditions and their lack of veterinary care.  While neglect and cruelty to animals is punishable under the law, advocates consider this situation to have been entirely preventable.

There are no laws licensing or regulating breeders in North Carolina, with the exception of those who sell to research facilities or pet stores.  That makes up about 90% or more of the breeders in North Carolina, with actual numbers ranging from 250-300 commercial breeders statewide (Source).  Legislation to regulate breeding died in the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2009, a direct result of animal farmers’ voiced opposition.  Unfortunately, hunters and AKC breeders also fear the limitations that new laws will place on their industries. Kim Alboum, director of the Humane Society of North Carolina, insists otherwise:

“This is about companion animals. It's about responsible care for dogs in breeding facilities.”

Last year, over 500 dogs and puppies were confiscated in puppy mill raids in North Carolina (Source).  While Alboum says she is working on a new bill that would prevent puppy mills, it’s going to need your help to get passed.  Contacting your representatives and voicing your opinion will be essential to getting this bill passed.  Look up your reresentatives’ information here and let them know you are opposed to unregulated commercial breeding, otherwise known as puppy mills, in North Carolina.

Charges against Willis and Lucile Mabe, owners of Dan River Bullies, are yet to be pressed.  The confiscated dogs are still being evaluated and are receiving the veterinary care they so desperately needed.  Let your voice be heard for the animals – contact your representatives today.
