Silent years of Jesus' life

See also

After the angels, the shepherds, the manger, the Magi, and King Herod, Jesus disappeared from the records. The Bible says little about Jesus until He was age 30. However, there are a few exceptions and they lead to the beginning of His ministry:
1. When Jesus was eight days old, Mary and Joseph took Him to the temple to confirm His name.
a. It is important to understand that the sacrifice made was for Mary to remove the uncleanness from pregnancy. Jesus was always perfect and never needed a sacrifice in His behalf.
b. While there, they met an elderly man named Simeon who prophesied the pain Mary would experience because of her son. Afterwards they met Anna who was the first female evangelist by telling others of Christ (Luke 1)
2. The angel instructed Joseph to take the family to Egypt and there they stayed until Herod died, but Joseph hesitated because Herod’s son took the throne. Instead, Joseph took them to Nazareth (Matthew 2).
3. When Mary and Joseph left Jerusalem after the Passover, they realized 12-year-old Jesus was not with them. They found him in the Temple confounding the doctors by speaking astounding things (Luke 2). This was the first time Jesus stated His mission. For the next eighteen years, Jesus submitted to the parenting of these righteous people.
4. Then one day Jesus laid down His carpenter tools, told his family good-bye, and for three years travelled, teaching Scripture and admonishing people to get right with God.
5. It is possible that, when John’s elderly parents died, he went to live with a group in the desert called the Essenes. They dedicated themselves to studying the Word of God. John established his own ministry as the forerunner of the Christ the Messiah before Jesus even started preaching. John’s impassioned preaching must have come from his desert experiences with the Essenes.
6. Jesus and John each taught God’s Word. They each preached repentance. They each taught the necessity of baptism. They each made great sacrifices including that they both were murdered.
So-called television scholars try to explain the events of those silent years. Common sense says they grew from childhood to manhood. They learned and experienced what they needed to have in the backgrounds. They had the doorknob open to their personal ministries. They set an example for every believer to discover their own ministry.
