Aside from the daily tensions of dealing with problems from China, the Tibetans have to cope with serious dependency problems just like other societies. The Central Tibetan Administration has reported on Oct. 4, 2013, "Dependency syndrome in our community is hindering our youth: Sikyong."
Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay has said that the dependency syndrome is prevalent in the Tibetan community and is hindering the morale of Tibetan children. He wants Tibetans to work to eradicate this poison and to create a more self-reliant society. Sangay made these comments at the conclusion of a health workshop on substance abuse which was organized by the Tibetan Department of Health.
Sangay wants Tibetans to work collectively to remove the problems of substance abuse and gambling. It is his opinion some of the causes which are driving children towards a life of vice include smoking by elders, especially teachers and parents, influence of bad company, gambling during weekends, and domestic violence. Clearly, there must be aggressive initiatives to help Tibetans prevent and treat dependency problems.
