Sigur Rós announce Kveikur

Sigur Ros announced today that their new album, Kveikur, will be releasing on June 18. In addition to announcing the record’s release date and title, they dropped the track listing and album art. In addition, they unveiled a brand new song, the first single and album-opener, Brennisteinn.

If the first single is any indication, then on their seventh full-length the Icelandic natives seem to be taking a huge departure from the previous endeavors. While past work showed Sigur Ros crafting delicate and lush soundscapes, leaning towards the ethereal, almost meditative side, the new single hits quite a bit harder. With heavy synths and deep bass aplenty, the song churns and chugs along, creating new musical worlds, ones that are slightly darker and more devastating: It’s beautiful and haunting, in an almost overwhelming manner.
