Signs we are growing in humility
The Gospels are full of stories about Jesus and the remarkable and selfless humility he demonstrated in his life, toward God and his fellow man. As followers of Christ, we are to imitate Christ and his humility and follow his lead. But how do we know if humility is increasingly present in our life? If we feel confident that we are growing in humility or think humility to be one of our strong points, then we are probably not as humble as we believe ourselves to be. So, how do we know if we are truly growing in humility?
It is important to understand exactly what humility is. True humility is the disappearance of our self - mostly our self-will and self-centeredness - and the emergence of God as being everything in our life. This type of humility is attained when we realize that we are nothing and God is everything. Instead of pursing a life that is centered on our self, we live a life that is centered on God.
But the test of of our humility is in our relationships with other people. As humility becomes part of our nature, through the work of the Holy Spirit in our life, it will be evident in our relationships with others. How we deal with the annoying trifles of daily life reveals our true nature. Unguarded moments show who we really are and if we are growing in humility.
There will of course be many failures on our part, but these failures should not discourage us. Instead, we should pray that God would mold us and shape us and grant us Jesus' disposition, particularly his humility and gentleness. As we grow more and more like Jesus and pray for his spirit to reign in us, his humility and meekness will increase in our life, and flow through us to others.
