Significant flooding possible through the weekend

A cold front over Lake Erie this morning will move slowly southward into northern Ohio tonight as a wave of low pressure moves east along it. Occasional rain is likely today and tonight as the wave moves through.

We may see a bit of a break in the rain Saturday morning as the first wave moves away, however, deepening low pressure over the southern states will begin moving our way. Rain will quickly fill back in by mid day Saturday, with periods of heavy rain possible during the afternoon.

Deep low pressure will move through the Ohio Valley and eastern Great Lakes Saturday night and Sunday. Heavy rain is likely with many locations picking up over 2 inches of rainfall. The combination of heavy rain and rapidly melting snow will create the potential for significant flooding across northeastern Ohio through Sunday.

Temperatures will be mild today and Saturday, and quite warm on Sunday with some locations approaching 60 degrees or higher Sunday afternoon.

Here is the forecast: For today, cloudy with occasional rain. Highs will be in the mid to upper 40s. Winds SW 10-20 mph.

Tonight, cloudy with periods of rain tapering to showers after midnight. Lows will be in the low 40s. Winds SW 10-15 mph.

Saturday will be cloudy with showers during the morning, then rain developing during the afternoon. The rain could be heavy at times. Highs will be around 50 degrees. Winds SW 10-15 mph.

Saturday night, cloudy with rain. The rain could be heavy at times. Lows in the mid 40s.

Sunday, cloudy and mild with rain, heavy at times. Highs will range from the mid 50s to around 60 degrees.

Looking ahead: A strong cold front will move through Sunday night with rain showers changing to snow showers. Lows will fall to around 30 degrees.

Monday will be cloudy with snow showers likely. Temperatures will hold steady or slowly fall.

Monday night and Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with a chance of snow showers, especially across the snow belt. Lows Monday night in the mid to upper teens with highs on Tuesday in the mid to upper 20s.

On Christmas Day, high pressure will begin to build across the area. It will be partly to mostly cloudy with a chance of snow showers during the morning. Highs will be around 30.
