One of the many advantages to living in New York City, the publishing capital of the world, is the opportunity to hear authors speak about their work, and to get a signed copy of their books.
Barnes & Noble, Borders, and the many independent bookstores in New York City frequently host author events in their stores. From literary icons like Joyce Carol Oates (Little Bird of Heaven), to popular fiction writers such as Jennifer Weiner (Best Friends), to pop culture figures like The E-Street Band's Clarence Clemons (Big Man: Real Life & Tall Tales), one has the chance to hear interesting people speak, and to meet them.
Cookbook authors draw huge crowds, even when they only sign books. You can count on a big group of Brits to come out and see native son Jamie Oliver (The Naked Chef). Food Network TV stars Rachael Ray, Guy Fieri, and Paula Deen always bring in a diverse group of people, ranging from the very young to the more mature.
Gourmet kitchen shop Williams Sonoma has hosted Martha Stewart, Ina Garten (Barefoot Contessa), Top Chef head judge Tom Colicchio, and Thomas Keller to throngs of enthusiastic foodies.
Broadway shows often have CD signing performances at the Barnes & Noble store in Lincoln Triangle. Hair, West Side Story, Next to Normal and 9 to 5 are a few of the shows that have brought along stars from the shows to sing a few numbers and sign cast recordings for lucky fans.
For those not in New York City, people frequently buy extra copies of signed books and CDs at these events and sell them on sites such as Amazon.com. Check the collectibles section for books signed by the author.
