A Beatles album signed by all four Beatles that was given to the doctor who treated George Harrison's sore throat prior to the Beatles' appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in 1964 will be featured in an upcoming auction in March by New Hampshire-based RR Auction, the auction house announced in a press release Feb. 12.
Dr. Jules Gordon was the house doctor at the Plaza Hotel from 1942 until 1985. In appreciation of taking care of Harrison, the Beatle gave Dr. Gordon a copy of “Meet the Beatles!” signed by all four Beatles. The New York Times reported after Gordon had treated Harrison with a vaporizer in the morning he was able to rejoin his fellow Beatles later that afternoon.
Both road manager Neil Aspinall and Vince Calandra (see our interview with him here), a Sullivan show employee, stood in for Harrison during the rehearsals. “George had tonsillitis and didn't go to rehearsals for 'The Ed Sullivan Show.' I stood in for him so that they could mark where everyone would stand, and I had a guitar strapped round me,” Aspinall said in “The Beatles Anthology.”
Also featured in the auction will be a copy of the first UK pressing of the band’s debut EP “Twist and Shout” on Parlophone Records signed by all four Beatles that was obtained in August of 1963 by a Disc magazine contest winner backstage at a Beatles show at the Gaumont Cinema; the registration for John Lennon's psychedelic 1965 Rolls Royce - Phantom V Limousine and a pair of Lennon’s wire-rim eyeglasses that was originally presented to Victor Borge.
RR Auction's The Marvels of Modern Music auction, which will feature more than 800 items, will begin on March 13 and run through March 20. More details can be found online at the auction house's website.
