Sigma announces 50 f1.4 Art, 18-200 Macro lenses

Third party photographic lens maker Sigma has just announced its latest pair of lenses: an all-new 50mm f1.4 DG HSM Art for film/digital and an updated 18-200 f3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM superzoom for sub-frame cameras.

So, what of the new lenses?

First up: the new 50. In sharp contrast to the existing 50 f1.4, the new 50 is a completely different beast, boasting a completely different, very complex optical design, consisting of 13 elements in 8 groups. The lens can be stopped down to f16 and features a 9-bladed diaphragm with rounded blades, designed to produce smooth bokeh (out of focus blur). The lens also features low dispersion and aspherical elements.

As for more things to like, there's the HSM focus, which means fast, silent AF that can be overridden at any time without having to flip any switches. The 50 f1.4 Art is also compatible with Sigma's new USB dock (which allows one to download new firmware and tweak AF parameters, among other things) and is compatible with Sigma's new mount conversion service, too.

Next up: the 18-200 Macro. Unlike the 50 f1.4 Art, the new 18-200 is an evolutionary step from its predecessor, which was launched in 2011. The new lens utilizes an updated optical formula and is also smaller, lighter, and closer focusing than its predecessor. Additionally, the lens utilizes Sigma's thermally stable composite material for its construction, is compatible with Sigma's USM dock, and can have its mount changed, too.

Want one yet? Both new lenses will be available in Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Sigma mounts, with the 18-200 being available in all of the above and Pentax, too. Unfortunately, prices and ship dates are still TBA.
