In an announcement that came just in time for the CP+ electronics show, third party photographic lens maker Sigma has announced 4 new lenses, three for mirrorless and one for mirrored digital. All 4 of the new optics will slot into Sigma's new 'Art' category, which is characterized by specialty, often fast aperture optics.
So, what of the new lenses?
First up: a new 30 f1.4 for mirrored sub-frame dSLRs. When Sigma announced its first 30mm f1.4 for sub-frame cameras in 2005, it was a first of its kind product in that it was a f1.4, 50mm equivalent for digital. Since then, though, numerous manufacturers have made 50mm equivalent primes for their cameras (though often f1.8 to save cost). Now, 8 years after its predecessor was announced, Sigma has revamped its popular standard lens with a new optical formula, rounded diaphragm blades, a new AF algorithm, and a rear-focusing design, all of which, on paper, go to make a good product even better.
As for the all new optics, they are for mirrorless digital and include a 19, 30, and 60mm focal ranges, all are f2.8. What does this mean for would-be buyers? Answer: a great set of fast f-ratio wide, standard, and short telephoto optics. Taken together, these will probably cover about 95% of the everyday photographer's photo applications, at f2.8.
