Sigma 50 f1.4 Art bests $4,000+ Zeiss

This past January, Sigma announced its 50mm f1.4 Art lens, which shares an optical design and structural style that happens to be very similar to the $4,000+ Zeiss 55mm f1.4 Otus. The implication: Sigma was going directly after Zeiss in the high-end 50mm market.

Now, it appears that the promise has been realized.

While certainly not an exhaustive comparison, a Chinese website has posted what appears to be the first test under lab conditions of the new Sigma 50mm. The Sigma was tested alongside Nikon and Sony lenses of similar specifications as well as the $4,000 Zeiss. Result: the Sigma appears to clearly best the $4,000 Zeiss.

Needless to say, this is hopefully a finding to be confirmed by further testing.

Want a Sigma 50 f1.4 Art? Unfortunately, pricng and availability are still RTBA. One thing, though, is almost all but for certain: the Sigma won't cost anywhere near $4,00.
