SIGG issues public apology after admitting to the presence of BPA in its bottles

SIGG, a popular water bottle company, recently issued public apology after an admitting earlier that some of its bottle liners contain trace amounts of BPA.

A previous article on safe water bottles explained the pros and cons of plastic, aluminum and stainless steel bottles.

SIGG bottles are aluminum and are made with an inner lining. In the past, SIGG claimed their lining had 0.0% leaching rate, but the company would not release contents of liner as to “stay competitive." Although some were comforted by their claim, others remained concerned.

Consumer concern was recently validated when the company went back on its previous claim of using 100 % safe liners in its bottles.

Steve Wasik, the CEO of the company, wrote on its website, "I am sorry that we did not make our communications on the original SIGG liner more clear from the very beginning."

Reports claim that Wasik knew that trace amounts of BPA were in the liner of SIGG's bottles, but said an agreement with the supplier not to disclose its ingredients made it impossible to admit.

"We were operating again under what we thought was an obligation to our supplier, right or wrong. We had no other supplier in place who could provide us a formula so we could continue to do business. Now we know it was the wrong decision. Now we know we should have, you know, put the consumer first," said Wasik on Thursday.
