Sierra-at-Tahoe, Mt. Rose weekend events

This weekend looks to be a great one to enjoy the great outdoors. Cycling, hiking, walking, skiing are all within the possibilities for the greater Sacramento area.

Mt. Rose ski resort features a return to the neon days of skiing. This Saturday, February 11, from 8 a.m. to 5  p.m. bring out your retro gear and head to the slopes at Mt. Rose.

The resort is hosting their Slide Back to Retro day. Stretch pants, outrageous jackets, bright bushy hairdo's will be the rage at this one day event. Gather up your look from the 80's, or earlier and have some fun with a whole lot of other retro minded skiers on the great runs at Mt. Rose.

The main action will take place at the Winters Creek Lodge at noon. This is the spot where the fashionista's will gather and enter the show. Anyone can sign up, with ski and resort swag up for grabs.

Mike Pierce of Mt. Rose told this writer today that it's a pretty hot show. Locals and out of towners will pit their retro ski looks against the judges for a shot at the prizes.

The show generally turns into a big, fun dance party with old school ruling the day. Dig out your neon duds and have a bit of fun.

On Sunday at Mt. Rose, Telemark skiers, and those interested in Telemark, will find Telefest Demo Day at the Winters Creek Lodge

Black Diamond, G3, Garmont, Dynafit, Scarpa are all scheduled to be there, with demo gear. Telemark and Randonee enthusiasts should have a great time at this one day event. This event is hosted by Reno Mountain Sports.

Over on Highway 50, Sierra-at-Tahoe presents Snowboarder Mags' "Superpass" on Sunday, February 12. The event is put on by Snowboarder Mag and is in its' 16th year.

Boarders from around Lake Tahoe will compete in this event for the chance to be invited by Snowboarder Mag to their spring shoot at Mt. Batchelor in Oregon.

Steve Hemphill, Communications Manager at Sierra-at-Tahoe, said that the event is a win-win for everyone. Sierra-at-Tahoe gets to showcase the local snowboard talent and Snowboarder Mag gets to be right there to spot the best amateurs and perhaps the next big rider in the sport.

Registration for the event is between 9a.m. and 10a.m. in the Aspen Cafe. The event is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the awards presented at 3 p.m. in the Aspen Cafe. Any amateur boarder can enter the event. Show up early for registration.

As of today, Hemphill says that the conditons at the resort are perfect for the weekend event. This also means that the conditions for a great day on the slopes for everyone are very good.

The weekend looks good for all of the resorts. The events at Mt. Rose and Sierra-at-Tahoe should cap off a great winter weekend in the mountains. Gear up and go!
