An airplane nearly landed sideways as it tried to set down in the midst of heavy winds. ABC News shared the startling video and details on Dec. 6. Luckily the Emirates Airlines flight from Dubai to Birmingham, England landed safely, albeit at a different airport about 100 miles away.
The Emirates Airlines Boeing 777 plane was trying to land during heavy storms on Thursday. As it came down to land, the plane approached the runway at a right angle and sideways. The pilot tried the approach twice, going back up into the air both times. After that, the pilot instead took the plane to Gatwick Airport in London.
ABC News notes that there was a Brussels Airlines plane that had similar struggles in the wind while trying to land Thursday, but it managed to do so without incident. The Birmingham Mail indicates that the passengers didn't necessarily notice all that much as they were on the plane. It looks unsettling from the spectator's viewpoint, but it seems the pilot had things handled the whole time. As commenters at the Birmingham Mail indicate, the pilot handled the heavy winds well and made exactly the right call in their opinion to hold off on landing and divert to a different airport.
