This summer from June 24th to Labor Day, New York's fashion designers will be putting on a show for the city, except this time, it's taking place on the sidewalk instead of the runway. Dubbed Sidewalk Catwalk, thirty faceless, reinforced, female mannequins designed by Ralph Pucci will be lined up midstride on Broadway from Herald Square to Times Square. Participating designers include Tommy HIlfiger, Donna Karen, Betsey Johnson, and Michael Kors. They will be assisted and accompanied by students and mannequins from Parsons, The New School of Design and Fashion Institute of Technology. Sidewalk Catwalk is organized by the Fashion Center Business Improvement District and will bring together many other New York organizations such as Macy's and The New York Times.
These one of a kind designs will be more along the lines of public art rather than ready to wear -designers are being encouraged to use more durable materials such as metals, plastics, and wood that can withstand 3 months of New York's hot summer. While the options are endless, it is definitely a challenging task -Eveningwear designer, Carmen Marc Valvo, is in the works of contacting a metalworker for his design. This enthusiastic project will definitely be a great tourist attraction during the summer months and will benefit the city and the entire industry. After the summer, BID will auction off these unique designs and the proceeds will be donated to Materials for the Arts, an organization that supports creative groups and public schools with recylced art supplies.
