Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Shaun Smith and defensive end Derrick Morgan, as expected had little to say following the teams 17-14 victory over the visiting Denver Broncos about a late fourth quarter sideline argument between the two lead to the benching of Smith for the remainder of the contest.
Titans Radio’s sideline reporter Cody Allison first reported the incident during the live broadcast of the game that the pair had been involved in a heated argument following Smith being penalized for a facemask violation.
Allison noted that Head Coach Mike Munchak had to be called to stop the incident.
“Nothing really, it's football. Emotions are high. Sometimes things happen like that,” Morgan said. “But it's not a big deal. Everybody was saying to guys to be smart. The same thing goes for me. I lined up off sides. We were just trying to be smart because we were in critical situations.”
Smith was even less forthcoming about what transpired.
I don't know. I don't know. Ask him,” said Smith about the matter with Morgan.
When asked further about the incident being emotions of the game Smith replied, “I guess, I don't know. I don't got no comment, man.”
Smith also had little to say about his apparent benching saying, “Take that up with the head coach. I don't know.”
Munchak also downplayed the situation.
“To be honest, I wasn't even aware that he didn't go back in,” Munchak said. “Sometimes, it just depends on what they're doing out there, if they're throwing the ball, which they were. But I think we just need to move forward.”
I knew it was an emotional game," said Munchak. "Jerry (Gray) talked to them, and I talked to them. It's just one of those things that happen. I just didn't want it to get out of hand."
Smith is no stranger to trouble with teammates. He was involved in an incident when with the Cleveland Browns that ultimately lead to his release by that organization.
