Side effects from fibromyalgia medications

If you have stomach problems stay away from aspirin or Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). They can cause stomach ulcers, stomach bleeding, nausea vomiting and heartburn. People are more at risk when they are over 60. If you do need to take these medications do not take them for more than 10 days unless they meet with your doctor’s approval.

If you have ulcers located anywhere in your body it is mandatory that you consult with your doctor before using these medications. Again if you have had intestinal bleeding check with your doctor before using these medications.

For the most part Acetaminophen has few side effects but consult your doctor before taking it if you have liver disease. Acetaminophen can cause more liver damage.

What about muscle relaxants?

Cyclobenzaprine is a muscle relaxant which has worked for people suffering from fibromyalgia. Muscles relaxants release chemicals in the brain to subdue pain by relaxing muscle tension and help you sleep better.

There are side effects including: dry mouth, blurred vision, dizziness, unsteadiness, change in urine color, drowsiness and clumsiness.

Anticonvulsants and fibromyalgia

Lyrica is an anticonvulsant which is used for fibromyalgia. This drug was originally used to control seizures. In the case of fibromyalgia, it will reduce pain and help with better sleeping patterns. Also, Neurontin (gabapentin) has improved pain management and helped reduce sleep problems.

Other pain relievers

Different pain relievers such as Ultram (tramadol) reduces pain. It is not a narcotic so it is not addictive like narcotics. Ultram is actually a narcotic-like medication for fibromyalgia without the addiction side effect.

Benzodiazepines such as Ativan (lorazepam), Klonopin (clonazepam), Valium (diazepam), and Xanax (alprazolam) control fibromyalgia pain, and is used for sleep management and restless leg syndrome.

The medications are very potent and should only be taken on a short-term basis. They have been known to cause death and other serious side effects.

There are also powerful narcotics that should only be used as a last resort when no other medications work for fibromyalgia. These narcotics include: Percocet and OxyContin (oxycodone) and Vicodin and Lortab (hydrocodone).
