Sickness strikes Ada-Borup with loss

It was the case of 'could have been' in Monday's girls basketball game between Ada-Borup and Hawley at Ada; but instead it was the case of the flu.

Ada-Borup (18-2) could have beaten Hawley (18-2) to continue its winning streak had 4 varsity players not been sick, but instead the Cougars streak ended at 17 games, as it fell to the Nuggets 36-27.

The healthy Ada-Borup players did all they could against AA Hawley and its main feature: 6 foot 2 inch Drew Sannes. Sannes was shut down by Ada-Borup in the first half scoring just 2 points, but her height and increased scoring chances led to 8 second half points.

Sannes's scoring kept Ada-Borup at bay, and her defense did the same as she sunk in the lane to cut off Ada-Borup's offensive cuts to the basket.

"Nobody wanted to shoot from outside tonight," Ada-Borup coach Dave Smart said. "Hawley covered Taylor [Kujava] well, and not having our regulars who can shoot from outside allowed Hawley to keep Sannes in the paint and cut off our scoring lanes."

Ada-Borup would have done anything for the right to the basket and a closer shot, especially taking into account its shooting performance of 22% from the field.

Hawley was nearly the same way in the first half, as it hit just 4 of its 14 first half shots that allowed Ada-Borup to stay just two points away at the half.

"We played hard at times throughout the game," Smart said. "More so in the first half, as we just couldn't stop their offense once it got going in the second half."

And Hawley's offense got going on an 11-0 run to keep Ada-Borup, and its sickness from catching it.
