Sick Town Derby Dames come from behind to upset Emerald City’s Flat Track Furies

This season, I am coaching Emerald City home team Andromedolls, so I will rarely have the opportunity to write recaps of Emerald City's bouts. Fortunately, Chas Horner has stepped up to take over the pen. I am working with him to help him adapt his writing talent to roller derby. Enjoy this recap from Chas.

The second bout of the Emerald City Roller Girls' sixth season was a story about teams facing demons. It was also a story about those demons fighting back.

The first match-up featured a visit from neighboring-county rivals Sick Town Derby Dames against ECRG's Flat Track Furies.

The Furies arrived eager to chalk up their first win of the season, having fallen just short in a hard-fought bout against fellow ECRG team the Andromedolls at the last bout. After enduring a depleted roster last season, the Furies are eager to rebuild, and Sick Town was a tantalizing target.

Sick Town showed up with something to prove as well. They recently graduated from their apprenticeship period with the Women's Flat Track Derby Association and are now full-fledged members of roller derby’s governing body. This provided Sick Town with ample motivation to post a big win for the many fans, who made the trip to cheer them on.

The bout began with an energetic start by the Furies, who racked up over 30 unanswered points in a series of commanding jams.

Sick Town did not wait long to respond however. They made up over half the deficit and put a defiant but brief stop to the Furies' scoring drive. Still, the Furies persisted and finished the first half with an encouraging 91-55 lead.

After the half, both scores continued to creep upward, with the gap slowly narrowing during much of the second period. It was met with surprising quiet when, with ten minutes remaining, Sick Town lurched ahead of the Furies, despite the swarming of the Furies blockers and the tirelessness of their jammers.

Though the win was still in reach, a big move by Sick Town's HotBoxxx widened the lead to three dozen with five minutes to play, and hope sank slowly for the Furies as Sick Town twisted the knife to a final score of 188 to 145.

Sick Town’s Ill Ninja led all jammers with 62 points. Wonder Dread was the top scorer for the Flat Track Furies with 57.

The Furies’ next bout is April 20th against Church of Sk8in.
